1881 census...Charles [5] is at Nethergate Street, Bungay with his father George [38], a hay cutter born in Bungay; his mother Eliza [37] born Ditchingham, Norfolk, sisters Charlotte [8]; Caroline [8]; Harriet [7] Eliza [2] all born in Bungay. 1891 census...Charles [15] an apprentice tailor, is still at Nethergate St, Bungay with his parents, and sisters Harriet and Eliza. 1901 census...Charles has not been found in the census, his parents were still at the same address. The family name is sometimes Hancey, sometimes Hancy. Charles was a tailor and married Sarah SAUNDERS (b.5-7-1866) in Newmarket in Q2-1904. 1911 census...Charles was living with Sarah at 24 Lowther Street, Newmarket and at that time had no children He enlisted in Newmarket. There is a discrepancy in age between civilian records and other records. She was still living at 24 Lowther Street on the pension card. |

The Egyptian Expeditionary Force was formed in January 1916. The 14th Army Troops Company of the RE were serving in Palestine at Nebi Samwil (1st attack on Jerusalem) at the end of
November 1917 before moving to the capture of Jerusalem on 6th December. Charles is buried like so many others in Alexandria which was a large hospital base. The pension card gives malaria as the cause of his death.
